Chapter 1 · Like the Tide

Like the Tide – Part 1

June 16, 2026

The sheets were damp under his skin, wrinkled and covered in sweat, scratching his limbs like sandpaper. Gawin let out a pained sob. Every month, he was getting worse. Neither isolation, pheromone candles, nor meds were helping anymore. He took a long, shivering inhale. The scent on the shirt he had stolen was fading. Something primal – lupine – deep inside of him, whimpered.

All the windows were shut, and so were the blinds. The room was saturated with the pungent smell of his heat. Gawin blinked, hazy. Even to him, the scent was overwhelming. But it was not the stench of lust that brought his heart to his throat; it was despair.

The neighbors kept complaining about the smells seeping through the vents.

Gawin was tired of them banging on his door every month, either threatening to call the police or begging to be let inside. They were disgusting. All of them. Every time one came close to his door, rage, blazing and explosive, overtook him. So far, none had been idiotic enough to push their luck and try to break in. His furious growls usually kept even the greediest ones at bay.

He was tired of this. Tired of going through this alone. Tired of waiting.

Gawin would rip his skin off if only it would tame the heat.

But there was no use.

He knew the only remedy to his pain did not belong to him, yet.

The chains around his wrists and ankles rattled as he writhed, letting out a pained sob.

They felt like ice on his searing skin.

Panting, Gawin dug his heels into the mattress and reached out between his legs: one hand around his throbbing length and the other between his cheeks. He sighed, both relieved and frustrated, as he rubbed himself in frantic, impatient motions. His fingers were not thick enough, and his hands not large enough. Annoyed, he pulled harder on the chains, attempting to reach deeper. The restraints allowed him to move from the bed to the bathroom, and thankfully, his apartment was nothing more than a shoebox, or he would have had to piss in a pot. But he hated them, hated that they reminded him of his condition. Every jangle was a punishment, mocking him for being trapped in his own skin.

With no more than a few tugs, Gawin came all over his sheets. He shivered for a while, his exhausted muscles wracked with irregular spasms. Heaving, Gawin closed his eyes and rolled onto his side. He was still hard. Still craving more, his body pulsing with the urge to break his chains and run through the streets in search of him.

Gawin brought the stolen shirt to his face and pushed his nose inside, sleep claiming him.

He needed him.

Couldn’t wait to mark him.

His Alpha.

Hey! I hope you enjoyed this first part!

I actually started writing this fic back in late April with the intention of publishing it in May for my birthday, but between Curiosity Is Not a Sin, my novel Violet Light, and life in general, I’ve been completely swamped.

This story was originally meant to be a one-shot, but I want to try something different and post it here in smaller chunks before uploading the completed version to AO3.

Please let me know if this premise intrigues you! It’ll help me figure out how much I should prioritize working on it.

Thank you so much for reading! And if you want to be notified of the next update, you can subscribe below! Muah!❤️

You’re so right, power bottoms are always the best! 😌 As for G, we’ll have to wait and see what he is… Nothing is ever that simple with him. Joss is in for a wild ride!

      My lovely Doku!

If you’re sat, I have to deliver! 😌
I can’t wait to hear what you think of the rest of the story. JG are such a perfect fit for the ABO universe because there are so many unique directions you can take with them, so I just had to write one hehe.

Talk to you soon, and thank you for stopping by ❤️❤️❤️
